Study programme: gymnázium (grammar school) 7902 J

One of the main objectives of the four-year study programme is to provide its students with modern comprehensive high-school education based on the latest findings, trends, and approaches in both domestic and foreign educational practice.

The study plan of this programme follows the requirements of the state education curriculum.

The programme offers a broad base of knowledge through a wide range of natural sciences as well as arts-oriented subjects. Moreover, students are given the opportunity to acquire and develop their knowledge and communicative skills in two of the following foreign languages: English as a compulsory subject and the following optional subjects: German, Spanish, French and Russian.

The school education curriculum also enables students to acquire knowledge and skills in various optional subjects. A well-chosen combination of compulsory and optional subjects equips students with a foundation of knowledge that can serve as a key to the studies at any college or university.

The main goal of our school is to turn students into knowledgeable and flexible people ready for both their university studies and their subsequent working lives, with a lifelong commitment to educational values.

Study programme: gymnázium (grammar school) – bilingual section 7902 J 74

In the school year 2010/2011 a new English-Slovak bilingual study programme was introduced at our school.

The programme covers five years and its main objective is to provide students with a modern comprehensive high-school education based on the latest findings, trends, and approaches in both domestic and international education practice.

The study plan of this programme follows the requirements of the state education curriculum for bilingual studies. It aims to equip its students with various high-quality competencies acquired through a wide range of natural as well as arts-oriented subjects and an adequate competency in the English language, which should enable the students relatively easily to take up their studies at any type of university or college either in Slovakia or abroad.

The state educational curriculum helps us to achieve the objectives stated above. It grants students the opportunity to acquire a wide base of knowledge in various subjects of general usefulness. Furthermore, students can construct their own personal profiles by selecting from a wide range of compulsory and optional subjects.

The first year of the study programme functions as intensive language preparation, which empowers the students´ potential for successfully making their way through the more specialized subjects which are taught in English during their subsequent years at school.

The first year of the study programme includes sixteen English lessons a week.

Division of the English study programme in the students‘ first school year:

In the first grade the main textbook is Ready for First. Students practise and obtain language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking. In the next grades they continue with the coursebooks Ready for Advanced and Pioneer C1+ in order to approach level C1 and pass the leaving examination (Maturita).

          Conversation in English

The  content of these lessons  is involved with practising different speaking tasks, providing students with models for various situations and discussions of controversial topics such as  relationships, ethics, religion, social problems, current affairs in society, politics and culture, to be prepared for interaction in different cultural and linguistic milieus.

The primary objective of these lessons is to encourage the development of all kinds of speaking skills.

          Writing in English

The  main aim of these lessons  is to develop and practise different forms of writing and create student´s own diary. Their own works can be published in our school magazine.

          Introduction  to Natural Sciences

The main objective of these lessons is to prepare students for the study of natural sciences in English in order to provide basic and general vocabulary in the field of natural sciences, and thus to acquire competence to prepare, lead and assess simple experiments.

          Introduction  to Social Sciences

In order to gain an essential basic vocabulary in the humanities our students study non-fiction, work with secondary resources, and collect, classify and analyze information.

From the second to the fifth grade our students acquire knowledge in accordance with the curriculum for comprehensive secondary schools, and the subjects of Geography, Mathematics, Biology, History, Civics, Art and Culture, and Anglophone Literature are taught partly or completely in the English language.

English lessons are divided as follows:

          - Coursebook Classes

          - Conversation in English

In the fourth and the fifth grades there is an immersion course to prepare specifically for the leaving examination (Maturita) and the official state exam.

The allocation of English language in lessons is sectionalized:

          - Coursebook Classes

          - Revision Seminar leaving exam (Maturita) seminar

          - Anglophone Literature

There are supplementary forms of studying – in the second to fourth grades it takes the form of communication within the frame of Erasmus + and UNESCO projects.

The school also organises school excursions to different foreign countries and foreign study programmes in cooperation with travel agencies.
